Anatomy of a Great Donor Newsletter
A strong donor newsletter does not need to be complicated. In fact, the most effective newsletters are often simple, easy to scan, visually clean, and focused on the relationship between you and your supporters.
Keep it simple
Do not overwhelm your readers. A crowded newsletter can make even good content difficult to engage with.
Aim for one page when possible. Roughly 300-500 words is enough for many partner updates.
Use photos intentionally. One or two excellent photos usually tell a stronger story than a large collection of average ones.
Keep the layout clean
Use generous margins and white space. Give the content room to breathe.
Make body copy easy to read. For printed newsletters, an 11-12 point body font is a useful starting point.
Caption your photos. A short caption can explain why an image matters and reinforce the story.
Keep it relational
Make your partners the heroes of the story. Show how their partnership contributes to the impact you are sharing.
Stay focused. Prayer requests can be meaningful, but keep unrelated family updates brief unless they are important to the story.
Add a personal sign-off. A scanned signature or script-style signature can make a printed letter feel more personal.
Make contact information easy to find. Give readers a clear way to connect with you.
Before you send your newsletter
Read it once from your donor's perspective. Is the main story easy to understand? Is the impact clear? Can they see how they are part of the work? If the answer is yes, your newsletter is doing its job.
